Bill is a computational linguist and Postdoctoral Fellow at CCC interested in how we use language to have nuanced conversations about complex subjects. How are communicative resources built up over the course of an interaction? Given that word meaning is flexible and context-dependent, how do speakers coordinate on what is meant? Bill’s work uses statistical and machine learning methods to investigate such questions. He hopes that better understanding the processes involved in linguistic expression and understanding will help us to design interactions where constructive communication can take place.
Before joining CCC Bill was at the University of Gothenburg in Gothenburg, Sweden. As a PhD student in the Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP), his work focused on semantic change in interaction. After that, he worked on modeling historical semantic change with the Change is Key (CiK) project, and most recently worked on the logic of Natural Language Inference as Postdoctoral Researcher in CLASP.
Outside of research, Bill’s interests include fiber crafts (knitting, weaving and spinning), gardening, and spending time outdoors.
